Career Pivot

Change can be hard, especially a career change, but it’s worth it. If you're ready for a change but unsure how to begin, start with these steps to move into the next era of your career with confidence.

A successful career pivot starts with the right tools. Here are a few to help you get started.

  1. Start With Your Why

A career pivot is a significant change, so take the time to reflect on why you want it in the first place. Are you feeling unfulfilled, seeking growth, or looking for better alignment with your values and purpose?

Getting clear on your “why” will guide your decisions and help you stay grounded when the path forward feels uncertain.

2. (Re)Brand Yourself

A career pivot does not mean starting over! Reposition yourself and what you already bring to the table.

Use your resume and LinkedIn to spotlight your transferable skills. You likely have more than you realize—show how they directly support the role you’re aiming for.

Highlight your unique background and adaptability. Shape your narrative to connect the dots between your past experiences and your future goals.

3. Maximize Your Network

Speak with people who’ve made a similar pivot to the one you’re aiming for. These conversations can offer valuable insight, boost your confidence, and bring clarity to your own journey.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Attend events, workshops, or conferences in the industry you’re pivoting into. Your next role might be just one connection or conversation away.

4. Plan it Out

Create a clear plan of what’s next within a realistic timeframe. This will give you structure and direction.

When outlining your career pivot plan, consider finances, including your personal expenses and a savings plan to prepare for the change. Include deadlines and target dates for each milestone in your pivot: skill-building goals, networking, and new job applications.
