Empowering Others: What does it mean to be a leader in the workplace?
We're constantly surrounded by narratives about what it means to be a leader, most of which is centered around personal success, ambition and self-improvement. While cultivating leadership skills is undoubtedly important, what’s often missing from the conversation is this: true leadership is rooted in service to others. In the workplace, that can mean mentoring a colleague, creating space for diverse voices, or using your influence to uplift those around you.
For Muslimahs and women of color, this approach to leadership is not only powerful, it’s necessary. We carry unique perspectives shaped by resilience, community, and care. When we share the wealth of our experiences with others, we strengthen our communities. It’s time we redefine leadership not just as rising to the top, but as rising while lifting others with us.
Here are some ways to lead through supporting those around you:
Tip 1: Mentor others
Mentoring people in your organization, especially those in more junior roles, is a great way to share your experiences and support rising stars. Many organizations have mentorship programs you can be a part of. If not, consider starting one yourself!
Tip 2: Lift as you climb
Make it a habit to spotlight the great work your team is doing so that they have a chance to shine, especially in rooms where they otherwise may not be highlighted. Another way to lift others up is to recommend other women of color for opportunities, whom you know would be great. Opening doors for others is a great way to lead with impact and service in mind.
Tip 3: Find strength in identity
Embrace your identity as a strength in your workplace. Think about it -- your experiences provide you with a unique perspective others may not have. So, use this to your advantage. Being confident in yourself gives others the permission to be more authentically themselves as well.
Tip 4: Make space to let others shine
Leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room. Thoughtful leaders often make space for others to speak in rooms. Try inviting others to important conversations and being an active listener.
Tip 5: Lead with a values-first approach
Integrate your faith values, such as trust and integrity, into all your workplace interactions. Leading with your values helps build trust and helps ground your decisions and interactions.
