How To: Navigate the Holiday Season at Work

The holiday season at work can be equal parts cute and chaotic. Read below for a mini survival guide.

Tip 1: Set Expectations Early

A quick heads-up keeps things easy:

“Can’t wait to celebrate - I’ll be sticking to non-alcoholic drinks!”

That one line saves you from a lot of awkward offers. We totally recommend you bring your own favorite non-alcoholic beverage so you have something that works for you, like sparkling apple cider or sparkling berry lemonade.

Anything sparkly feels celebratory!

Tip 2: Offer Alternatives

If every invite feels like it’s happening at a bar or surrounding alcohol, suggest something different:

  • Cookie swap (everyone wins!)

  • Daytime potluck

  • Volunteer hour

  • A cozy coffee break instead of a happy hour

Tip 3: Know Your Limits & Stick to Them

It’s 100% okay to:

  • Show up, say hi, and dip

  • Leave early when it stops feeling comfortable

  • Skip the event altogether if it’s not aligned with your values

Tip 4: Find Your People

Some of us are lucky to have Muslim colleagues — check in and see if they’re going too. If not, snag a friend as your plus-one. Strength is in numbers — having your own little holiday squad makes everything more fun, and you can sip your sparkling cider without feeling awkward!
